The Advantages of Information Technology in Education

Information technology (IT) has continued to grow and affect just about every sector of business including education. IT has a profound effect on the way we now communicate, teach and learn. Information technology in education is also called e-learning or technology-based learning. A primary advantage of IT is the wide range of levels served from elementary to graduate level.

Flexibility

Information technology allows for self-paced learning. Due to the limited time available in traditional classrooms, teachers are less able to ensure that all the students have understood a lesson before moving onto another. By using computers, learners can study at their pace and ensure they understand everything they learn before moving on. Learners have access to instructional learning materials that are both interactive and non-interactive. Students can review materials as many times as they like.

Distance

Barriers of distance are removed through the use of information technology. Enhanced distance education is one way of ensuring that learning can take place in different places without requiring transportation. People are able to earn degrees from universities and colleges of choice without having to travel. Colleges awarding certain qualifications can be located almost anywhere in the world where there is Internet access. A student can enroll for the program, study and earn credits without leaving home.

Time

Students are more capable to study on their own time as they work. This provides an opportunity for students unable to attend full time due to other commitments. Technology makes it more possible for people to earn a degree after many years out of the school.

Learning Tools

Students and instructors have access to a large variety of learning tools. Some tools include video and audio communication, online lectures, whiteboards for realtime math and science equations, discussion boards, online chat rooms, virtual classrooms and podcasting. Instructional material can be downloaded with little effort. The availability of the learning technologies means that students and instructors decide which proponents are best suited to their own learning needs within the subject.
