How to Run a Green Small Business

How to Apply for a Small Business Grant

When starting a small business you should know that there is funding out there for you if you know just where to look.  The Federal Government does not give out grants to start up or expand a small business.  Small business grants are usually available through state and local programs.

  1. Research the different kinds of funding and understand what type best fits your needs.  There are several different kinds of grants each worth different amounts which can be given to specific types of businesses.  Make sure you understand which category your business fits in.

  2. Study the requirements that are required for the grant and make sure that your business meets all of them.  Different states have different requirements; make sure you know what is required of your business for your state.

  3. Submit your application.  Most applications are submitted online.  Make sure you have a grant proposal letter and a perfected business plan.  If you need help with either of these, a good place to visit would be with your local Small Business Association.  They know all of the rules, and have all of the tools to help you with any questions you may have while applying for your grant.

  4. Provide complete and accurate information in your application.  An incomplete application may not make the review process or can delay approving your grant; some applications can take up to a year to approve.  The key is to understand the process and be patient.  If you have taken all of the proper steps, you should be contacted when your application gets approved.
