How to Install PVC Bathroom Sink Drain Plumbing
PVC is replacing metal as the material of choice for bathroom drain plumbing because it is durable, inexpensive and simpler to install. Replacing the drainpipe in a residential sink does not usually require getting a permit. Easy to use drainpipe kits are available in local hardware and home improvement retail stores.
Items Needed:
- PVC pipe
- PVC fittings
- P- trap
- PVC primer and cement
- Saw
- Pipe wrench
- Shut valves
- Tape measure
- Measure the drain using the tape measure. You can purchase individual pipes and fittings, or a kit that comes with all the pieces.
- Shut off the main water supply before you begin. Remove the old drainpipe paying close attention to discard any liquid inside the pipe.
- Connect the PVC pipe kit pieces together to gain perspective about installation. Cut them if necessary to attach one end to the drain stem connected to the sink.
- Attach the P-trap to the drainpipe and insert it into the metal drainpipe pipe on the wall. Ensure that the drain connection is well secured and watertight.
- Cut a tailpiece that will fit between the P-trap and the wall pipe. Attach the piece onto the stem pipe on the base of the sink. Insert the nuts and the washer and make sure that you screw them on securely to the sink stem.
- Connect the tailpiece with the P-trap and make sure they fit properly. Insert a nut and a washer and tighten them.
- Fit the PVC drainpipe with a nut and washer, and attach it to the wall drainpipe. Tighten the nut but ensure that the drainpipe is loose enough to allow the P-trap to be attached.
- Insert a compression washer into the P-trap on the side that has the PVC pipe. The P-trap should fit between the two pipes. Cut a piece of PVC to add to the connection if necessary.
- Apply primer and PVC cement at the connection where the P-trap attaches to the wall connection. Make sure to seal all connections and allow them to dry.
- Test the drain system for leakage after the sealant dries.
