Types of Natural Gas Plumbing Pipes
The most common material used for gas pipe is copper, but it is not the only option. Other materials include new plastic resins and other less expensive metals. Builders can install alternative pipes depending on their budget, but the piping must be approved by the local building council. Each type of pipe has its advantages and disadvantages.
Pipe and Tubing
Pipes are made from rigid steel, iron, copper, plastic or brass. Tubing, on the other hand, refers to semi-rigid copper, steel, plastic or aluminum. The term pipe can be used to refer to both the pipe and the tubing that forms the system.
Metal Pipes
Most jurisdictions require black iron and hot dipped galvanized iron to deliver fuel gas piping. The metal has to meet criteria such as meeting standard weight. The list of approved materials can be used for exterior, interior and underground pipes. Copper and brass are often approved for all uses while aluminum is approved only for indoor use.
Metal Tubing
Made of the same materials as piping, tubing is constructed from seamless copper or aluminum alloy. The tubing is used with non-corrosive gases. Aluminum tubing is not approved for exterior or underground use. Construction codes limit the way pipes are protected, placed and how deep they are buried.
Plastic Piping
Plastic fuel gas piping is made from polyethylene. This is the same material used to manufacture plumbing material. The material is cheap and flexible making it a choice for many local gas suppliers. Its use is generally limited to supplying gas to lighting fixtures and outdoor grills.
Corrugated Stainless Steel
Many builders are turning to steels materials due to the ease of installation. The steel tubing is coated with vinyl, which gives the pipe a smooth coating. Self-fitting connections flare easily making the job easier with fewer tools. Installation and sizing are the same, but only HVAC and master plumbers are allowed to install it in most regions.
