How to Seal Threaded Plumbing Pipes

Plumbing leaks often occur at the places where pipes connect. Most plumbing pipes are threaded, meaning that they twist into one another. Leaks can be prevented by properly sealing these threaded plumbing pipes using a few simple supplies that can be purchased at the local hardware store.

Items Needed:

  • Adjustable wrench

  • Plumbers' compound

  • Teflon pipe tape

Teflon Pipe Tape Sealing

  1. Turn off the water connection before attempting to seal the pipes.

  2. Use a wrench to disconnect the pipes at the connection point. Use a towel to dry the threads of both pipes. Be sure to wipe the interior of the pipe, as well.

  3. Apply teflon pipe tape to each part of the threaded pipe. In most cases, three layers of tape will be sufficient to properly seal the pipe. Apply pressure to the tape to ensure that it is smooth and flat.

  4. Screw the pipes back together. Use the adjustable wrench to ensure a secure connection. You may begin using the water immediately.

Plumber's Compound Sealing

  1. Turn off the water connection.

  2. Use a wrench to disconnect the pipes from one another. Dry the pipe threading thoroughly using a soft towel. Wipe the inside of the pipe to remove any remaining moisture.

  3. Use the plumber's compound according to the package directions. Apply the compound as directed to both parts of the threading connection.

  4. Twist the pipes back together. Tighten the pipes using an adjustable wrench. Check that the connection is secure.

  5. Allow at least 12 hours for the plumber's compound to dry prior to turning the water back on.
