Trane is a good brand. However, you get what you pay for. Almost every manufacturer has its less expensive "apartment quality" unit. I would stay away from those.

My 2 cents would be to get an higher efficiency unit. They are built better. As an Architect, I always specify the mid to higher level unit. They perform and last longer, as well as being more economical to run.

Make sure you get a good contractor to do the installation. The quality of the install is just as important as the equipment.

I'm an end user and not a dealer/installer. At my business, I have three heat pump units to provide cooling and supplemental heat. One of the units has been repaired at least 6 times (its 6 years old currently), with the last service calls being non warranty. For the one unit, I have over $600 invested for non warranty service calls and it has broken again...I'm living without it right now. A second heat pump unit has also failed, now needing a new compressor after 6 years. The third unit is still working, thankfully. I always felt Trane was a good product, but I've changed my mind with the failures I've had. The original contractor who installed and sold me the units is reluctant to help any more since the failures have eaten into his profit margin.

I have been a HVAC service technician for over 30 years, never been a Trane dealer for two main reasons. For one, they are too propietary meaning all replacement parts must come from Trane which are ridicously over priced and I have seen customers wait for more than 3 weeks in the heat of summer for a motor that just had to have this special bracket. I can also honestly say that I have had to repair just as many

Agree with Circulaire Heating and Cooling. It's not necessarily a difference between Trane being "good" product as it is getting parts for it. We recently were called on a 3 year old unit-needing a new blower motor and control board. The new board was different wiring making our job more difficult. I find Trane & Carrier both make acquiring parts more difficult and making changes more often to recent models. Not to mention it took a week out to get the parts from Trane. Carrier had stuff on back order for 2 weeks. Customers don't like that. Goodman is a decent product, easy to get parts for and price wise very affordable.

The parts in a trane are made by the same companies that make the parts in every other brand of ac units. Sporlan, ge, white rodgers, honeywell, copland are just a few. No ac manufacurer actually makes anything, they just assemble it. And most dont even assemble them anymore. they have others do it for the. Trane and carrier are natorious for having expensive replacement parts. For instance I was working on a carrier last week they wanted $900 just for an indoor coil. I could buy a new air handler with a varialble speed fan for just a bit more. And trane wanted over$1100 on parts to replace a compressor. I got my customer a new outdoor unit for $1500 and got them 10 year parts and labor.

So to anwer your question, they are not much differant than the others. just little things here or there. They cost more than they should, and are not cheap to repair. best thing to do is find a great installer to do the job. That is much more important than brand names!

All equipment is really only as good as the technician installing it and maintaining it regularly. Most of A/C units nowadays have pretty much the same warranty, all of them have certain parameters they need to meet to be installed. I guess you could say it's a matter of personal preference. We're worked with Trane in the past, and even though we carry different equipment, Trane is still a good brand. Just find the right people to put it in :) Good luck and wishing you lots of comfort with the new A/C :)

Trane is a good manufactured brand I had one. When making a large purchase exercise due diligence. You may want to research the Consumer Reports for comparisons by model etc. they are always a good resource I use them a lot.

Trane has an excellent product line that is typically pricier than some competitors. They have good warranties. Parts can be more expensive and harder to get unless you are dealing directly with a Trane dealer. I would get an estimate for a Bryant equal unit just to compare. Bryant is another excellent brand that has very good warranties. Cost for repair parts are typically not as expensive and are easier to find. Ask neighbors & friends if they recommend any certain contractor for installation, usually that is the best way of knowing who to hire for the work. Good Luck!!
