About Alpine, CA
Alpine is part of San Diego county in Southern California. Known for incredible weather, the city is located at 4,000 feet elevation, so it escapes the hottest temperatures. While the city is within commute distance of San Diego, 30 miles away, many residents work locally at the major attractions, Viejas Casino and Viejas Outlets. Drawing thousands of visitors per year, the casino is run under the auspices of the Kumeyaay Indian tribe. Authentic cowboys visit the area each year to compete in the Lakeside Rodeo, eleven miles east of the town, in events ranging from wild horse races to barrel racing. Ranchers, cowboys, casino workers, and retirees all live in the area in the shadow of the Cuyamaca mountains. Students attend the Alpine Union School District. Famous current and past residents are the Kumeyaay Indians, who first encountered the Cabrillo expedition from Spain in the San Diego harbor in 1542.
