Cleaning bathroom tile around toilet and bathtub?
I've tried CLR, LimeAway, and other OTC type products and it still appears yellow and grundgy. I am trying for the "new" look and nothing seems to work. What about some sort of diluted acid?

Lots of bad advice on this thread, as someone else mentioned a lot depends on the type of tile and grout. But as a general rule of thumb grout is an alkaline product, when you put acids and bleaches on it, you are making it worse. The grout may temporarily look better, however the pores are opening up and the grout is being etched away. This will cause the grout to soil faster and eventually fail. Again, without knowing what kind of floor it is, I can't comment on the best approach, but I can say for sure that if harsh chems are continually used, you will be looking at an expensive regrout job!

As a certified tile and grout cleaner I can tell you that you have not provided sufficient enough information to properly answer the question. First what type of tile is it - ceramic, porcelain, travertine, etc. Second what type of grout is it - cement, non-cement, poly-vinyl mix. Third how wide are the grout lines? You indicate that you have already tried CLR with no effect. CLR is an acid. In fact it has three types of acids as its ingredients. Acid will permanetly damage your grout and possible the tile and shoud not be used. Do you have photos? check out my cleaning blog for more informatjon.

Hello, I have had the same problem in my house. I do a lot of removdeling and the best method I found rather than cleaning the grout is to take a "grout remover" and only slightly remove the top layer of the grout and buys a small quantity of grout which matches the other grout you have. You can then add a very thin line of grout around the tub.
Grouting is not a hard process and if your bathroom isn't too big I would suggest doing the entire room. It would be a much more even look, but again there are so many colors of grout you could match it and just do the toilet and tub.
There are also many products available today which are "sealers" you can use around the tub/bathtub. These come in colors as well.
Your other choice are strips that can be applied also as a sealer, however in the past I have not found many that fit great or stayed in place. This has been years ago and I would believe there are better products available now.
I hope this helps. A "toothbrush" (stiff) is a good tool too!

We are in total agreement with both Pristine Tile & Grout Restoration and 4wowFloors -- you simply haven't provided enough information. The type of tile and grout absolutely determine what type of cleaning products should be used.

It seems as though there was never a sealer put on. If it's a porous tile, more than likely it may not change no matter what you do. Your only solution would be to try spraying on a bleach water solution, remember to open all the windows. Spray on and leave on for about 2 hrs, then rinse off the excess. If the bleach changes the color of tile, then it's a porous tile and you will need to put a tile & grout sealer on. If it doesn't work, your last resort is to re-tile.

You will need the following items:
1. Wet Scrubbie Sponge - nylon scrubbie on one side and sponge on the other side
2. Comet or Ajax
3. 2 clean towels
4. Windex (accept no imitations)
Directions:
1. Load up sponge with water and squeeze out on floor around back and sides of toilet.
2. Sprinkle comet or ajax on dirty wet areas
3. Scrub each tile or section individually with the sponge. Don't worry about getting germs, that is what the Comet or Ajax is for.
4. Wipe up area with one of the clean dry towels.
5. Wash down by spraying with Windex
6. Dry with second dry towel
7. Inhale and smile

My personal favorite is1/3 cup Lemon Pine Sol mixed with 1/3 Cup Clorox Clean Up per gallon of warm water. Put on desired surface and let it sit for approx. a half hour. Scrub with tooth brush or scrub brush. Repeat until desired results.( Make sure to spot test first)
