Not All Zirconia Restorations Are Created Equal

CAD/CAM technology has made it possible to create restorations out of high-strength ceramics like alumina and zirconia. Previously, ceramic restorations in the posterior region were limited to single units. Now, with the introduction of zirconia as a dental material, clinicians can place all-ceramic restorations in the anterior and posterior regions. Although most manufacturers claim to offer chemically similar zirconia, the way the zirconia has been processed can create significant differences in the final restorations. Furthermore, dental laboratory that is in charge of manufacturing the final restoration for a dental office should be aware, mindful and careful to create a ceramic substructure without any structural weaknesses. When Zirconia substructure is being processed, it is very important not to over heat the restoration and create a mini fracture that could lead to a failure once forces are applied. Even though Zirconia is being referred to asWhite Alloydue to its strength, if a laboratory technician is not aware of product limitations and reduces the thickness of the substructure beyond allowable required limit, it could be another reason for failure.
