I would say social networking is beneficial to most businesses, even ours. We are in a niche business and usually deal directly with mortgage brokers and credit repair companies, and I would have to say through social networking channels we have been able to connect with many people we currently do business with. We are based in Los Angeles but through social networking we have been able to expand our reach and build connections in the East Coast as well.

One thing to consider, regardless of whether a business "works" the social networks, is that for many small businesses with websites that are not optimized even for their own business names, their social network pages can appear more often in search results than their own website. From that perspective, the effort required is definitely worth it.

Yes I feel social networking is beneficial to your business if done in a planned way. Social networking increases contacts which if nurtured carefully keeping a calm and not so urgent composure can yield fruit over a period of time. If you show urgency your new contacts will feel about something fishy and shy away from you. All people are intelligent so you have to be patient. Patience pays...
