Social networking is the new way to advertise and stay connected. As a business you must be listed on at least a few of the main social networking sites like facebook or twitter. It has proven to be a very useful tool for our company and we've received numerous clients from networking sites. It's free, so why not?

I don't think social networking is going away anytime soon, but it is still in it's infancy. I do use my Facebook/Twitter pages to make announcements and tout professional news. Not much tweeting, as most of the info I get is way too mundane from those in the trees. Facebook is getting utilized by more and more of my associates to get "news" out. I think that if you are going to use it, do it deliberately and sparingly. Monitor what is posted and "hide" or unfriend the people who are posting things like pictures of their 2 year old, telling you what they had for lunch and building a farm. That isn't going to build your business. For now, put a little block of time in your schedule each week to look at it or post info, but don't let it take over. If you're crusin' on the net, you're not building valuable one-on-one relationships.

It's been important in growing our business, as word of mouth these days happens online a LOT. As long as you set a plan of what sites you want to utilize, how much you want to update, and how you plan on expanding your social media presence... it's not a waste of time.
Just be realistic. Yes, we all know that people can mindlessly "like" or "+1" our pages and never give it a second thought. But at the same time, just getting your logo out there is a subtle marketing strategy and who knows, somewhere down the line someone will stumble upon you from a friend's social page.

The vast majority of businesses using social networking don't understand the value of social networking thus I think by and large, for them it is a waste of time that is discarded once it doesn't "click". Think about it, as a consumer do you want a business that just promotes itself or do you want more, much, much more? You have to provide a value to the consumer if you are a business, make people want to visit your site or store and answer any and all questions they may have. Altogether I see many, many businesses misusing social networking for their own benefit, not the customers. This is the biggest reason it does not work for them. Make your self the go to girl who has the answers to every question every customer has ever asked. Make yourself invaluable, Make yourself so that a consumer wants to come to you- then you have an opportunity to make the social networking successful, only then.

Costs. Yes, while it is benificial for business, it requires time and energy. The more we network, the less time to build and deliver our products. And, to a point, the more we network, the more products we deliver. As a small business, we see the direct nature of the cost and effect on a personal level. In consideration to creating a full time position for social networking, there would be a net (loss) to our business. Therefore, Networking is a definite (positive) when we have spare time. And that is not often.

It can be a little bit of both, to be honest. Social media is such an effective way to raise your visibility, build credibility and trust with your target audience, in addition to many other positive benefits.
The problem is that many just jump in without a plan. We see this a lot when we meet and learn about our new clients. They get frustrated as they aren't getting the results in the time they spend on social sites. We always suggest (or devise for these clients) a social media marketing strategy which includes time (and money if necessary). I think the main thing to keep in mind is that social media is one aspect of your overall marketing strategy....not the ENTIRE strategy. It is not the golden egg - it just oils the wheel so you can grow your profile and business faster.

As long as you know your target audience, Social Networking can be a huge benefit. Think of well targeted Social Networking as a captive audience of interested "future" clients. Again, you must know your audience - e.g: if you are selling hair products it probably is a good idea to avoid a "We love shaved-head" group...right?
Social Networking also allows your brand name to be propagated easily (the viral effect). Just to peek your interest - Facebook currently has in excess of 600 million people who spend more time in front of the computer than ever before.... create the right message and you suddenly will find yourself answering a lot of customer calls....

It really depends on the type of business. For some it is a great tool and for others it is a waste of time. With all social media you run the risk of alienating followers or friends if you constantly shove your sales message own their throats.
