There are a lot of myths to SEO, but it really comes down to how current is the content on your website and is it relevant. You must update or add new content on a monthly if not bi-weekly basis. This is probably 80% of your SEO. You can do all the other little "tricks' that you want for SEO, but if you are just going to build a website and leave it alone you are doomed to fail. Well, some folks like having separate websites, and cross-linking them. In other words one completely separate website references another website you, even if about the same topic. It does not work if you got all the sites under the same hosting account or site. You may be thinking that is expensive to have separate website.
Is it expensive to have multiple websites?
No, it is not. Very low cost. Just $12 a year for full featured business website, ads free (unless they ads you put on their or control), and now even the site is created for you for free. You will get pretty much everything a business site needs at enterprise levels. A+ all the way. Considering that someone can have a complete functioning professional looking website with home page, online store, blog, guestbook, photo gallery, and much more in less than a day (often in less than an hour), it can be pretty quick to add multiple sites, and with very tiny expense and massive reliability.

SEO is a continuous process. You can build a great looking website but if you do not work on your SEO techniques, you will never rank at the top.
Also, if anybody claims to be able to rank you on page 1 overnight, you better take a run for it... Even Google themselves state that this is never a guarantee.
You can rank page 1 and stay there, yes, but it can only be done with the right techniques, continuous work and patience. In general you should take out about 6 months to see significant results from all your SEO efforts.
SEO is also used to create a name for yourself, brand your business and become popular within the areas you're trying to optimize your site for.
Right now a great way to brand your name and help your rankings along is by setting up a mobile website. Before long, Google has already announced to start penalizing every website that doesn't have a mobile version.
You will risk to lose over 50% of your current web traffic if you do not go along with the new technology.

Update you website every two weeks .. Search Engines Like Fresh Content. Also, relevant content is key. Have keyword rich content, but it should be relevant content. Also, make sure your title tag is keyword rich and change it often.
Make sure to do your keyword research. You don't want to miss out on opportunities because you have not kept an eye on what people are searching for.

As a local business that serves the city you are in, the best way to increase your traffic is through putting your efforts on Local Search Marketing. great keywords/key phrases is the first step. Also ensure that your website is validated with Bing, Yahoo, and Google. Not just submitted but validated. Do some link enchanges with other sites. The goal is to embed your URL throughout the internet in as many places as you possibly can. Make sure your page content is full of rich text. If you are using flash or a landing page, the search engines zip right by these. Make sure your content is relevant to your keyword/keyword phrases. Also submit your website to various search engines. This is time consuming, but critical.

There are many ways to do this. SEO is part being creative and part just knowing what to do. Your website for one needs to be SEO friendly. Have the correct tags in your coding, Key words, links etc.... I could go on and on. Keep your website clean and as much as I like flash keep the flash conent limited.
