I would recommend asking to see images that the prospective photographer has shot at outdoor weddings. Our studio for example specializes in outdoor portraiture so many of our sample images are of outdoor events. It is important to find a photographer that you feel at ease with as well as one that you love the images. It is very important to tell your photographer what type of imagery you want for your big day. Visit us at www.customimages.org for examples of our work.

Definitely look at prior work, make sure they have an assitant because it may be necessary to filter or block the sun for the best shots. Otherwise you can appear washed out. Outdoor weddings are beautiful but can be a challenge at times for photographers. You need to be sure you like the pictures you see from prior outdoor weddings. Don't be afraid to ask questions, and don't feel obligated to book with the first photographer you speak with.

I am a professional photographer who specializes in beach weddings on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. I've shot well over a thousand weddings in the last twenty years, and most of them outside. Most photographers who market themselves as wedding shooters are prepared for outdoor events. Fire up your favorite search engine and put together a list of photographers who service the area where you plan to have your wedding, and look at their web sites. Make notes about the ones that impressed you most, then start contacting people. Many photographers have their packages and prices posted on line. If you like a photographer's samples, but don't find packages that appeal to you, ask about custom packages. You will find that email gets you a lot less satisfaction than a phone call. If you are in a position to meet with photographers in person, set up an appointment and do so. Your photographer's personality, and how you hit it off, is as important to your event as shooting skill and price. Plan well in advance, short-notice hiring can reduce your options severely. If you're getting married near home, skip the Internet and grab your Yellow Pages. That's a handy resource we keep forgetting about in this digital age. Be sure to see plenty of samples of pictures. If you book a company that has more than one photographer, find out which one is yours; and make sure you've seen plenty of samples of that person's work. One last thing, when planning any outdoor event, be sure you have a clear, feasible, and palatable plan "B" just in case the weather doesn't cooperate. Good luck, and congratulations.

Any experienced professional photographer should be able to shoot in an outdoor setting as well as a variety of indoor locations (small hall, large hotel banquet room, etc.). Look at their work and make sure they have samples of complete wedding albums at a variety of locations to view. Tom

You can consider asking around at bridal boutiques, florist shops and wedding officiants. These three come in contact with the photographer at weddings sometimes. Therefore, they may know of someone that caters to your mobile needs. As an officiant, I know of some because of the many outdoor ceremonies that I do every year.

I sometimes say that outdoor weddings are a specialty, and even if the event will be predominantly indoors I like to consider exteriors for photo opportunities. Ask to see sample work. Ask to see what you expect on your wedding day, and expect the unexpected. For my own outdoor wedding years ago, I had a tent rental company on standby. Usually a professional photographer will use a fill flash to fill or offset the shadows created by unpredictable lighting outside. Many times the direct sun will not provide tyhe best lighting and needs the fill. The correct exposure is a blend between what you see and the exposure on the flash.

I'm not sure of the best answer for this question, but I do know of one in southern Maine -- in the town of York. Shane Corcoran has an exceptional reputation with respect to quality, price, and attitude (he's very easy to work with and his enthusiasm is contagious).
Since you're in TN and he's in ME, it's unlikely you'll be able to use him, but he could direct you on your own course of action.
I suggest you take a look at www.shanesweddingphotography.com and contact Shane through that site.
