There are two ways to get a car with no credit or co-signer. The first is the old Chinese way of One Lump Sum, paying for a car with cash. there are a lot of distressed people out there looking to sell a second or third car they own for cash to get them through. The other is the buy here pay here car lots. The best of these is probably DriveTime, but understand they are going to want a significant down payment (enough that you could do option one), you are going to pay about 29% or higher interest rate, and overpay for the price of the car. Also understand that if you are a day late, they will come and repossess the car and charge you to get it back. The good thing about using someone like DriveTime is that they report to the credit bureau and it will help your credit score for later purchases.

There are many car lots that will provide the loan with "no credit check." Many of these lots will actually give you a loan - though many require a significant down payment. Most though will still report to the major credit bureaus, and improve your credit score as long as you make your payments on time.
As HasntBeen suggested you'll often pay more than the car is worth, and you should most definately ensure the car is in good working order.
If you are having difficulty trying to locate one of these types of dealers, brokers for these dealers often advertise on Craigslist, and will help you locate one that best suits you.
Some national brands that may be in your area are JD Byrider, and DriveTime (formerly Ugly Duckling).
