Gerry Bertier and His High School Career

A middle school American football player and Paralympian, Gerry (pronounced like "Gary") died on March 20, 1981. He rose to fame as a member of the T. C. Williams High School football team that won the 1971 Virginia State Championship and was featured in the Titans, which is the Disney film Remember. Bertier was also Howie Livingston's nephew. Bertier got into in an automobile accident towards the end of the 1971 campaign, which left him paraplegic from the waist down. Despite suffering this harm, Bertier continued to compete in sports and attended Northern Virginia Community College. The "Bertier #42 Foundation," established in 2006 by Bertier's family, is devoted to generating funds for spinal cord injury research. His name is also on the gym at the Alexandria City High School, formerly T.C. Williams. Early life When Bertier's parents separated when he was around eight years old, his mother raised him primarily until she got married again to Robert Agnew. Bertier was seen as a friendly, goal-oriented person as a kid and young man. He frequently spoke of his lifelong dream of taking home an Olympic gold medal as a child, and as a committed competitor in a variety of sports, he appeared to be on course to achieve this ambition. Career beginnings and successes At Hammond High School, Bertier started his high school career and became part of the football team. He quickly established himself as a pivotal figure and the defense's skeleton. Bertier started at linebacker as a sophomore, a position for which he garnered numerous accolades. When Hammond H.S. joined forces with two other Alexandria high schools to become T.C. Williams High School, Bertier was only able to play for three seasons. Because to the consolidation, the coaching staff and football team both had a large number of new faces, which led to racial conflict among the players. This new mix of Titans had to work together as one effective team while overcoming racial prejudice, which was a challenging battle for many team members. Defensive end Julius Campbell, a comrade and friend, and Bertier served as the team's captain during this trying period and provided encouragement to their teammates. The T.C. Titans started the 1971 season in a strong manner, despite the fact that the squad was still dealing with prejudice at the time. The Titans won the Virginia State Championship after going 13-0, including nine shutouts. In addition to going unbeaten, the Titans outscored their rivals 357-45 over that time.[4] During the season, Bertier recorded 42 sacks and 142 tackles. Bertier was recognized as the team's defensive MVP. He won first-team all-region, all-American, and all-state accolades in addition to being named the National Prep School Football Player of the Year.
