Should I get a loan to buy a used car to improve my credit even though I have the cash? 
I have good credit, but have never had a loan besides a student loan. I am buying a used car from an individual and have the cash, but should I get a small loan anyway and pay it back quickly in order to get excellent credit? I want to buy a house in a couple years and know excellent credit is important.

That type of credit is allright, but it is really just here today and gone tomorrow in the scoring system. Credit Scoring likes history and what is happening now. Student loans help even less on your credit report.
You should pursue a true secured credit card that does not pull your credit report and does report to all the national credit bureaus. Then maintain when you can a balance of $1 to 10% of the credit limit. When you get your statement pay the small balance and charge another $1 to 10%. Doing this will further maximize your credit score potential.
If you have a credit score now once the new credit card post on your credit report you should see some fair improvement.
