First, I will qualify myself as not being a professional photographer. Also, I am not in Florida. That means my answer is just for the general audience, but some may apply to you.

Now for my qualifications -- I have a sister getting married this weekend. Her fiance' has been unemployed for a few months and she is a teacher at a small parochial school. She actually had a yard sale to pay for her honeymoon! Needless to say, budget and barter have been the key words for her wedding. She was able to find someone who offered to do the photography for her wedding gift. However, in the process I found out that one of my fellow employees does wedding photography as a part-time job. I asked to look at some of her photographs and I was surprised by the pictures she took. She is very busy on the weekends and often at night. Where does she advertise? Craigslist! She gets a few referrals, but by keeping her prices low and having an having a great book of her previous work. She has some great references who will vouch for her too.

One of our clients is Buentello Photography 512-280-8930.
Having seen their work I was impressed. He is an older gentleman and seems to know a lot more about "photography" than many of our other clients with their handheld digital cameras. He is a little exclusive, but If you let him know that Nathan at Technik referred you, he will take good care of you.

I have used TJ Fegley. She is an excellent photographer, great with children, and easy to work with. I have used her personally, and conducted weddings (as a pastor) which she worked, and have always experienced her to be professional and easy-going. I highly recommend her!

Ask around to other professional vendors such as florist, dj's & venues sites. They see the photographers working & can help you find a professional. Do choose a photographer with experience in wedding photography. There is an art to posing people to look good & also getting the great candids everyone loves. Not to mention doing it fast.Find out what is included in the price. What type of service is included? Wedding albums traditional & flush mount books, photo's posted on line and retouching are just a few services. Of course look at their photo's of a few different weddings & meet the photographer in person. Communication is very important. Educate one self & look at a variety of photographers. There are different styles. Is there more than one photographer. We have 2 one who does all the posing & another photographer capturing the candids. You can check out my web site at www.haskenphoto.com If you wish to see a wedding on line contact us at service@haskenphoto.com for password. PS book early. The best investment of your day will be a great photographer!

Ahhh, such a perplexing question. In this day of inexpensive digital cameras, everyone thinks they're a great photographer. The landscape is littered with those who lack skill and education and often talent.

Look for memberships in the professional organizations. You might start at PPA.com and use their "find a photographer." Memberships do not make you a great a photographer, however a membership demonstrates that the particular photographer is willing to spend money and time furthering their education rather than just going through the free regurgitation that proliferates the internet.

Look for awards and degrees. Certified Professional Photographers have gone through a written test of their knowledge and a review of the work by their peers. Less than 5% of the photographers will pass certification. Master photographers have demonstrated their ability in competition. Look for trophies on the state level and regional levels as well.

Now that your down to a hand full of photographers, go look at their work. A whole, complete wedding - not the 20 best images they've taken over the last four years that they put on their web site. Ask to see a complete wedding. Most photographers these days proof on line, so this isn't that hard. Go through all the images. How many "wow" you? How many bore you? If you find yourself loosing interest about half way through, I would suggest you move on to another photographer. Also look at things like the dress. Does it change color and density in the images? The dress doesn't change in life, why does it in the pictures? (Answer: the photographer didn't shoot it right or correct it later.)

Be prepared to pay more. There are shooters in this area that charge just few hundred dollars for CD of files. They are not color or density corrected. The good shooters in this area start at over $1000.

Good luck. And remember, of all the things you pay for at your wedding, nothing (except the rings) will at last your pictures. Don't skimp.

Dan Harris of Photoart, provided a great answer. They key is to know what you want, do you want cookie cutter photos or do you want creative fun memory filled photographs. The next step is take to your friends, coworkers etc, over the yearrs I have found that the best sources are referals. Go with you desires don't let anyone steer what you should have, the photographs need to be what you two want. Last, you should own all of your pictures when you are done, many photographers will do this many won't.
Good luck and have a great Wedding.

Now-a-days just about everyone is a 'photographer' and everyone knows someone who will 'do a great job' but their critera and requirements may not be the same as yours. First you need to determine what is most important to you about wedding photography. Look at lots of photos and make yourself a collection of the ones you really like and decide if those are mostly 'posed or setup' or if they are 'candid or photojournalistic' then view lots of websites and begin to narrow down your options. If you prefer photojournalistic type photography (that won't ruin your wedding-day plans) I would start with www.WPJA.com. In all cases, to avoid future disappointment, be sure you see lots of pictures from actual weddings your potential photographer has done and do your homework. I offer more helpful info at: www.freephotography.info. Be sure you don't delay the process as good photogrphers are in high demand and popular dates book quickly. Good luck!

    Hi,

Your best best is to ask other brides or recently married couples as to who they would recommend as a wedding photographers. When asking for a referral, please ask about their experience with the photographer, time lines for album delivery etc. While cost is also a major factor of discussion, you may find that paying a little more for an experience photographer would be well worth the cost over the year as you enjoy and share photographic memories of your special day.
