As an interior designer, I have to say to find an interior designer. An interior designer should have access to many furniture manufacturers. They most often will discount the furniture to the same price as you would pay at a furniture store. Ask you local designer about how they work. Many designers offer their design services at no charge if you are purchasing through them or are available for an hourly rate. You will spend more on a quality piece of furniture or one that is made in the USA. However, working with a designer they can best help you select pieces that will last over time both in durability and style. A designer can help you make the best choice in style, size, placement etc. If you can't afford new look for consignment, second hand, garage sales, etc. Generally you will want to avoid second hand upholstery furniture. If buying older pieces stick to wood pieces or items that can be re-purposed. Maybe an old solid wood paneled door could be your new headboard. An old round lamp table with a less than perfect finish could look fabulous draped in a wonderful fabric skirt, or redone in a worn painted finish. First question, what is your budget? If you have an unlimited source of income, sit down with a good designer and have a fine local craftsman build what you want. If you are of normal means, local consignment, second hand, "goodwill", or antique stores are a good source. We offer a consulting service, you may look for a local craftsman who offers a similar service because unless you know what you are looking at, mistakes can be very expensive and time consuming. It also depends on your tastes, if you a modern furniture buff, the aforementioned sources will more than likely waste your time.

If you're looking for quality home furnishings, but can't afford the insanely high prices of new furniture stores, and don't want to deal with pushy commissioned sales people, then you should check into your local Consignment Furniture stores.
The better furniture consignment stores will be very picky about only accepting "like-new" furniture on consignment from the area's finest homes. So you're not going to find any dated, faded, damaged, or smelly furniture. Some also carry builder's model home furniture, overstocks, and showroom samples on consignment. Most furniture consignment stores today have very strict acceptance standards and the furniture you find here is very gently used..."like new", and is priced from 40% to 80% less than the original purchase price. Since inventory changes daily, the best one's will even have an Online Showroom on their website showing you what is currently in inventory.
If you're in the Portland Oregon area, please check out our 10,600 sq. ft. furniture consignment store Upscale Consignment Furniture and Decor in Gladstone. Or online at www.UpscaleConsignment.com.
Here you will truly find the best prices on quality beautiful home furnishings!

Another option would be to choose furnishings that are unfinished from an unfinished furniture store so you know you are getting solid wood. Then, have them finished any way you choose. Your furniture is then unique to you.

Well Tags, you might try estate sales, or your local consignment stores. Wide selection, good prices, and sometimes even delivery service.
