How to Caulk Around Windows
Caulking around windows is an easy way to keep air from coming in and getting out around windows all throughout the year. This can help lower utility costs and also save you a substantial amount of money over time. Knowing how to do this correctly can be very beneficial to any homeowner.
1. Gathering Your Materials
You will need to gather the necessary materials before you begin. These include a candle, a pencil, a razor blade, soap and water, a clean cloth, a putty knife, caulk and a caulking gun.
2. Locating Cracks or Gaps
Make sure all windows are closed. Then go all around each window holding a burning candle. If it appears that the flame is being blown by the wind, you have found a gap that will need to be caulked. Mark each gap lightly with a pencil as you find it so you can go back and find them easily when caulking.
3. Remove the Old Caulking
You will need to remove all of the old caulking from around the windows that have gaps. This can be done using the razor blade. Make sure the all the caulk is scraped off the windows and then wash the areas thoroughly with soap and water and a clean cloth. Allow to dry completely.
4. Apply the New Caulking
Now it is time to apply the new caulking. Cut the tip of the caulk tube off at a 45 degree angle. Punch a small hole in the top of the tube. Insert the tube into the caulking gun and turn the handle slowly until the tube end fits snugly against the gun. Apply a thin strip of caulk around each window that gaps were found in. Use the putty knife to smooth the caulk down and allow it to dry. Once this has been done to all leaking windows, you will find it much easier to heat and cool your home.
