How to Antique White Cabinets
Antique furniture is beautiful and offers a charm all its own. It is also very expensive. You can repurpose old furniture and cabinets to create a beautiful white antique finish and keep your cost low. You can give your kitchen or bathroom cabinets a new finish in a weekend.
Supplies
- Antiquing glaze
- Clear sealant
- Flat or enamel paint
- Soft cloth
- Paintbrush
- Sandpaper
Directions
- Remove cabinet hardware and doors. It is much easier to antique the doors when the doors are not attached.
- Clean the cabinets to remove dirt and finger prints. Use mild cleaner or just warm water. You want to avoid leaving behind an oily residue as it will cause problems with your paint.
- Sand the cabinets. You will only need to lightly sand the surface. Rough it up just enough to remove any shine and gloss.
- Brush on a base coat of either enamel or flat paint. This will be your base or bottom color.
- Brush on a light coat of the antiquing glaze; use a soft cloth to wipe in the same direction as the wood grain. Work from the inside to the outer edges. The application should vary in look and texture. Don’t try for perfection. You want the final product to look aged and symmetry is not important to achieve that.
- Brush on the clear sealant to finish the piece. Sealant will make the cabinets easy to clean without ruining your hard work. An added bonus is that it will help show off your work.
