How to Bid Jobs for General Contractors

Making a competitive bid to work for a general contractor can help a worker to land the job. A person who works for a general contractor is often referred to as a subcontractor. Subcontractors perform many different jobs for a general contractor and often specialize in a particular field such as electrical work.

  1. Find out the extent of the work that a general contractor has up for bid on a job site. Go to the site with the general contractor and inspect the property. Ask the general contractor any questions that you have about the job while you are at the site. Take some notes to help you come up with a bid amount.

  2. Talk with the general contractor about the job and ask how much time you have to complete it. Find out when you have to submit your bid. Review the information from the general contractor to start preparing your offer.

  3. Determine how much time it will take you to complete the job. You already know the deadline since you spoke with the contractor, so you need to decide if it is possible to finish the task on time. Figure out the expenses such as gas and supplies to help you arrive at a bid price.

  4. Call the general contractor or go to the job site to present your bid. Ask the contractor when you can expect to find out if you are the winning bidder. Make a note on your calendar to call the contractor if you do not hear anything by the date you were told.

  5. Get back in touch with the general contractor to find out if you are hired for the job. Make arrangements to begin working if you are the winning bidder. Purchase the materials you need for the job and cancel any other jobs you have lined up if necessary.
