How to Clean Projection Televisions

Picture quality is affected by the cleanliness of television sets. External cleaning is relatively easy, but sometimes the lenses on the inside of the television need cleaning as well. Dirty lenses and mirrors make the picture on a projection TV look fuzzy.

Exterior Cleaning

  1. Dampen a cloth. Gently wipe dust from the television's exterior surfaces. Apply water and a mild detergent to another rag. Wipe the surfaces again, using more pressure in areas where dust and dirt have built-up or hardened.

  2. Complete the final wipe down with a dry cloth. Reduce streaking on the screen by using window cleaner when finished.

Interior Cleaning

  1. Power off the TV and unplug it. Angle the television with the back towards light. You need to clean the lenses and mirror. Do not touch other parts of the interior due to risks of electrical shock.

  2. Remove screws from the back of the TV. Place them in a container. Remove the back cover.

  3. Inspect the TV for interior damage. If you decided to clean the TV due to problems with picture quality, note whether there are damaged wires visible. Contact a TV repair professional if you notice wire damage.

  4. Find the lenses and mirror. Gently wipe away the dust with a dry cleaning cloth safe to use on camera lenses.

  5. Reattach the back cover and screws. Plug in the television and turn it on. Check for improved picture quality. If the picture quality does not improve, consult a TV repair company.
