How to Decorate in Shabby Chic

Shabby chic decorating is the perfect way to give a room your own creative touch. It includes using antique items, aged furniture and almost anything one can imagine that does not fall into any other decorating category. These are some tips for decorating a living room in shabby chic to give you an idea of how creative shabby chic can be.

1. Sofas and Chairs

A great way to decorate both sofas and chairs in a shabby chic style is to cover them with slipcovers. These slipcovers can be made from a variety of materials including faded floral fabrics, white or blue denim, or even a paisley tablecloth fabric. Make your own shabby chic throw pillows out of gingham or fresh white eyelet material. A great thing about using slipcovers is that they can be removed and washed at any time.

2. Walls

Add some antique paintings to your walls to give it even more shabby chic appeal. Choose pictures of flowers, landscapes, fruits or old homes and put them together in groups. This is an easy way to create your own shabby chic mural to display.

3. Tables

Instead of having traditional wooden coffee tables and end tables, find some antique-looking iron garden tables to use. Iron garden chairs are also perfect for having additional seating if company pops in. The more unique your decorating is, the more charmingly shabby chic it will be.

4. Accessories

If you enjoy displaying family pictures, put them in antique silver frames. Place them in various places throughout the room such as on a mantle, end table or coffee table. Grouping them together will make them more noticeable to visitors and will give you nice conversation pieces.
