How to Decorate in Contemporary

Contemporary decorating has become more popular over the last few years. It is often used in hotel rooms, apartments and offices. The modern look of contemporary decorating focuses on simplicity, clean lines and a subtle sophistication. Contemporary designs are functional while still being very tasteful.

1. Clear Out Clutter

Any time you are changing your style of decorating, one of the first things you need to do is get rid of all items that make a room look cluttered. The contemporary style is an especially clean style of decorating. If the room has excess clutter, it can overpower the contemporary style and make it nearly invisible to the naked eye.

2. Choose the Right Colors

The colors used in a contemporary style are quite simple. Solid neutrals, black and white are most commonly used. There are rarely any patterns for this style, other than bold stripes or blocks of no more than two different colors. You may prefer to use neutral colors for walls, windows or furniture and add a few solid bold colored accent pieces to complement the room.

3. Furniture

Contemporary furniture has a very different design than many other styles. Almost any piece of contemporary furniture will have smooth, clean lines on all sides. There are no frills in fabrics or carved details in wood work. Chairs may be perfectly square and sofas may be completely rectangular. Fabrics are normally a solid neutral color that can be accented with cushions or throws in solid bold colors.

4. Floors

Contemporary style floors are also quite simple. They are usually made of either vinyl, tile or wood. If carpet is used, it is of a commercial grade. Solid colored area rugs can be used to add color and texture to floors.
