How to Repair a CD Drive on a Computer

It is not uncommon for a CD drive on a computer to experience problems. It can be frustrating for someone that does not know what is causing the problem. On the other hand, most problems with a CD drive on a computer is not hard to fix with a little guidance.

How to Repair a CD Drive on a Computer




  1. Check the CD that you are attempting to use in the disc drive for dirt or scratches. Either of these could prevent the drive's laser from effectively reading the disc.


  2. Spray a can of compressed air in the drive of the computer to clean the drive's laser. This will get rid of the dust and dirt that is inside of the drive.


  3. Check to make sure that the disc drive is properly plugged into the computer. This could be the reason that the drive is not functioning properly.


  4. If you have an external disc drive, make sure that the firewall ports are working. This can be done by plugging the disc drive into another computer that you know is working properly. If the ports are bad, you will need to take your computer to a repair shop to have the ports replaced.
