I have worked multiple social networks for the past 3 years and received zero business contacts from doing so. Every meeting, training session and sales professional says that these networks are a necessary part of the work day, but my experience is that it has wasted my time. It also educates my competitors as to what offers I have available. And it has invited thousands of solicitations which again has taken up my time. I have 3 businesses and I have received the same time consuming reults for all 3. Plus, I feel that the social thing is so used now that you get lost in the mix.
Belly to belly is still the way to grow your business.

I have not seen much in benefits yet - but I also do not feel it is a waste of my time. In my case, I need customers to come to us.
Through social networking, I am hoping that people will come to trust me, find my information to be beneficial, get to know me better so they feel there is a bond between us before they come in my shop.
I think it will take some time before social networking will help my auto repair shop. But I am going to keep my name in front of people - right now - by answering this question - people are seeing the name of my business - and it only took me a few minutes to answer this question.
Sometimes people have to see something numerous times before they try something new. People are comfortable with things they already know. With time, people will see my name enough that they will give my business a chance.

At first I felt it was a waste of time as I was new to social networking. But, as I grow my business and start meeting some of the people online or in person it is definitely helping my business. Social Networking like regular networking is a numbers game. Your numbers have to be high enough to get the result you are looking for.

I believe it does have a great impact for your business. People buy from who they trust. Your "networking friends" will refer their people to you because their friends trust them...make sense? :)
Depending on your network (if it is small) it will take longer to make those friends and build a trustAnswered by Send Out Cards 1115 Elizabeth Ct. , Joliet, IL, 60435, 815-744-9870 (Novice with 1 pts.)

It is never a waste of time when one is trying to promote your own business. It might be difficult in a social setting to stay in a professional frame of mind. If this seems difficult for you then I wouldn't promote your business in that particular setting. You always want the potential colleague or customer to think of you as a professional. Take a minute and ask yourself , if you would do business, with YOU ! Trust in your instincts. They will never steer you wrong. Social Networking IS beneficial to my business. My business is helping business owners. And, my business is being an online tv producer.
It is a must to communicate with others and connect. What way is there better than the world wide web?!?
The real question is how much time does one put in to it, and which social network is best for what the individual business is doing.
Expect a great day! ~~Karen

I agree that Social Networking is in it's infancy. But like a human child, it is growing up fast. You should definitely consider being a part of the growth. Electronic messaging has made the business world a very small place indeed with lots of population. Social Networking can put you out ahead of a lot of your competition just because not everyone is doing it yet. The folks who are, you will find, are business saavy and make good clients and referral sources as long as you verify that you are working with a legitimate entity. Do the research is my advice and know who you are working with.
Social Networking is definitely not a waste of time if it generates any interest at all in you and your product or service.

I believe that social media can be beneficial to your business if used correctly. I recently read an article, "Social Media, How Facebook & Twitter affect search engine optimization" from Mogul Media LLC. It gave me a clear picture as to what I was doing right and what I need to change.

We have started using Facebook for our business and have found it very beneficial. We have used it to connect and promote our shredding business so I know it can work for most businesses. In most cases, these networks are free, they just take time to keep them updated and interesting enough to get people to stay interested/coming back.

Social networking is to a business like chicken soup is for a cold - it can't hurt! There is however, a right way and a wrong way to do it. Use social netowrking to report sales, new product lines, and overall business model. DO not mix it with personal conversations and keep it as professional as possible.
